At John Kapenga Painting, we are more than just painters—we are dedicated professionals who love what we do. Meet the Grand Rapids painting team that makes it all happen:


  • Owner

    My painting journey began in high school, working for a contractor in Holland, MI, specializing in custom homes along the Lake Michigan shoreline. While attending Calvin College, I refined my skills and graduated in 2008 with a degree in International Development. Shortly after, I founded John Kapenga Painting. Over the past 15 years, my wife and I have built our painting company, serving clients across the Grand Rapids area.

    Outside of painting, I love spending time outdoors hunting, fishing, and snowboarding. I also enjoy cooking with my wife, playing games, and parenting our three kids—along with our dog, Ody!


  • Design & Marketing

    Since we started John Kapenga Painting in 2009, my career has taken me through web startups, churches, interior design, and digital marketing—all while raising our three kids and working toward a Master’s in Christian Studies. What once felt like wandering has actually been a journey of gaining valuable skills that now help me support our painting company in just the right ways, at just the right times.

    When I’m not researching, writing, or coordinating efforts for the business, I love reading, puzzling, coloring, and baking. I also enjoy walking, skiing, swimming, gardening, and spending time with my chickens—often with a kid by my side!


  • Painter

    I’m Brandon, a painter from Grand Rapids, MI, who enjoys bringing commercial spaces and homes to life with precision and detail. A fresh coat of paint can completely transform a room, and I take pride in making that happen for my clients.

    Outside of work, I love spending time with family and friends, whether it’s relaxing at home or enjoying the outdoors. I appreciate the simple joys in life—good company, great conversations, and memorable experiences. I’m always looking for ways to grow, both personally and professionally, and I look forward to helping bring your next painting project to life!


  • Jr. Painter

    Silas is our oldest child and our youngest painter. He mostly works during school breaks and summers. When he’s not sharpening his mind and painting skills, he enjoys video games, reading fantasy novels, and listening to music. He is also active in Byron Center High School’s Theater and Choir programs.

    As a 2024 Grand Haven High School graduate, I bring enthusiasm and care to every painting job. I enjoy refreshing homes and businesses with a clean, polished finish.

    Beyond painting, I love cooking and trying new recipes, attending concerts, and exploring the outdoors. Hiking and trips to the beach help me recharge, and music is always part of my day. I enjoy making the most of life’s experiences and staying active. I look forward to working on your next project and helping to create a space you’ll love.

Junior Painting Supervisor
Job Type: Full-Time, Hourly
Pay: $20–$25/hour (based on experience)
Experience: 1–2 years painting experience required

Job Summary
We're looking for a reliable and skilled Mid-Level Painter to join our team. If you’ve got 1–2 years of painting experience and want to take the next step in your career, this could be a great fit. You’ll support the team lead, mentor newer painters, and take pride in delivering high-quality work.

Key Responsibilities

  • Prep and paint interior and exterior surfaces using brushes, rollers, and sprayers

  • Maintain clean, organized job sites and respect customer property

  • Guide and assist entry-level team members

  • Set up and break down materials and equipment daily

  • Follow project scopes and product specs

  • Communicate clearly with crew leads and clients

  • Log hours daily using our digital time-tracking system

  • Follow all safety protocols (PPE, ladder safety, etc.)

Requirements

  • 1–2 years of residential or light commercial painting experience

  • Proficiency with painting tools and surface preparation

  • Attention to detail and a strong work ethic

  • Ability to take direction and work independently

  • Reliable transportation to and from job sites

  • Physically able to lift 50 lbs, climb ladders, and kneel for extended periods

  • Authorized to work in the U.S. (background check may be required)

Benefits

  • $20–$25/hour (based on experience)

  • Overtime pay (1.5x after 40 hours/week)

  • Paid time off and paid holidays (after 90 days)

  • 40 hours of sick leave annually (available immediately)

  • On-the-job training and opportunities to advance

  • All materials and equipment provided
